Chapter 5 Control Panel 76 Functions auxiliary This section describes functions executed by turning on the printer while holding one or more buttons. These functions are shown in the following table and explained in detail after the table. Chapter 5 Control Panel 78 Compress Printing Mode You can compress your printing data to the ratio of 75% by following the steps below. Note: Compress printing mode is effective only when the printer is in the ESC/P mode. Turn off the printer. c Caution: Whenever you turn off the printer, wait at least five seconds before turning it back on; otherwise you may damage the printer. 2. The printer makes two short beeps and enters the compress printing mode. About Your Printer's Default Settings The default settings control many printer functions. While you can often set these functions through your software or printer driver, you may sometimes need to change a default setting from the printer's control panel using the default-setting mode. For a detailed description of the settings you can change in the default-setting mode, see "Understanding default settings" on page 80. For instructions on changing the settings, see "Changing default settings" on page 94. Chapter 5 Control Panel 79 Understanding default settings This section describes the settings and options available in the default-setting mode. All items available in the default setting mode are divided into three groups depending on the applications. You can select the three main menus while making the default settings and then change the setting of each item which belongs to the menu you selected. On the Common Settings menu, you can change the settings which are effective in all three application modes. On the PR2 Mode Settings menu, you can change the settings which are active in the PR2 mode. [. . . ] See also pitch. compress printing This function reduces the size of the data. You can compress your printing data to the ratio of 75%. control codes Special codes used to control printer functions, such as a carriage return or line feed, instead of printing characters. cpi See characters per inch (cpi). default Value settings that take effect when a device (such as a printer) is turned on, reset, or initialized. dithering A half toning method in which dots are printed in a predetermined pattern to simulate a shade or tone. Dithering works best for images with solid colors, such as charts and graphs. See also half toning. dot matrix A method of printing in which each letter or symbol is formed by a pattern (matrix) of individual dots.
